Dealing With Alopecia (Coping With Hairloss)
Self Esteem and self worth play a vital role when dealing with the hair loss disease alopecia. Today society places far too much value on looks, youth and wealth as well as other superficial things. That being said most people living with alopecia areata are well adjusted, have fulfilling lives and are for the most part happy. Many physicians say the key is to find value within yourself, not by how much hair you have or how “good looking you are”.
That last line reminds me of a movie with Ben Stillar, called “Zoolander” where Ben plays “an incredibly good looking male model” …LOL (truly silly and funny stuff). Several times through the movie he mentions “there is more to life than being an incredibly good looking model”.
Their are a number of things you can do to help yourself deal and cope with alopecia. Today their are excellent hair pieces and wigs available, in fact if your under the age of 18 make sure to visit Locks Of Love which helps young people with human made wigs of excellent quality free of charge. Other methods include using natural looking make up to color in small patches of hair loss, this often works well for those that suffer from alopecia areata which usually results in small round patches of hair loss.
Of course the web is an excellent place to get in touch with others that have been affected with alopecia, stop by our resources & support sections for some excellent links and to find others who have alopecia. Sometimes just understanding that your not alone can be a big help. Many of the sites listed (including this site) allows member to post questions or comments.
As mentioned several times, personally I am thankful that alopecia is not life threatening. Try to focus daily on the positive things in your life and never loose your smile
