Different Types Of Alopecia

Alopecia is a common disease that effects a large number of people, in fact one in every hundred people will experience alopecia at sometime in their life. Having alopecia does not mean you will loose all your hair although that sometimes does happen. An estimated 20% of the people diagnosed with alopecia will experience complete hair loss with no re-growth at all while the remaining 80% or so will see re-growth to occur randomly.

On a personal level I can tell you that some of my spots have filled back in while others have remained “baldish” for quite sometime. With my luck the way it usually works is one of my bald spots will grow back while another spot on my scalp becomes bald. However I seam to do OK, I had a very think head of hair before “alopecia” and my spots have been in places where it is easy to hide them (to some degree).

Alopecia Areata is categorized according to severity.

  • Alopecia Areata is mild patchy hair loss on the scalp
  • Alopecia Totalis is the loss of all scalp hair
  • Alopecia Universalis is the loss of scalp and all body hair
