Male Pattern Baldness

So just what is male pattern baldness, and how does it related to the term “alopecia”? Alopecia is a broad medical term for hair loss and has several variations. I personally suffer from “Alopecia Areata” which is caused by an autoimmune disorder.

Male pattern baldness in known in the medical community as Androgenic Alopecia, which results from a genetic predisposition. In common terms it’s from your folks, figure if your father lost his hair as he got older chances are good the same will happen to you as well. It is also important to note that mpb (male pattern baldness) usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown.

Hair Loss Treatment Options For MPB

It is important to note that treatment for MPB is not needed medically speaking, often times men will try hair weaves, hair pieces or a change of hair style which can often be the most economic means of treatment.

Their are several medications that are used to treat male pattern baldness:

  • Minoxidil (also known as Rogaine) — a solution that you apply directly to the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. It slows hair loss for many men, and some men grow new hair. The previous degree of hair loss returns when you stop applying the solution.
  • Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) — a prescription pill that inhibits the production of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. Like minoxidil, you are more likely to have slower hair loss than actual new hair growth. In general, it is somewhat more effective than minoxidil. The previous degree of hair loss returns when you stop taking the drug.
  • Hair transplants consist of removing tiny plugs of hair from areas where the hair is continuing to grow and placing them in areas that are balding. This can cause minor scarring in the donor areas and carries a modest risk for skin infection. The procedure usually requires multiple transplantation sessions and may be expensive. Results, however, are often excellent and permanent.
