Women Hair Loss
Hair loss (also known as alopecia) can effect women, men as well as children and even animals. Ofen the loss of ones hair is conected to self esteme and self worth and can effect people significantly in certain social settings. It can be escpecially hard on women and childrens, women who suffer from hair loss certainly have a tougher time then men.
Hair Loss Can Be Caused By Several Diseases As Well As Various Types Of Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia, one of the most common forms of hair loss, usually has a specific pattern of temporal-frontal loss in men and central thinning in women. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved topical minoxidil to treat men and women, with the addition of finasteride for men.
Telogen effluvium is characterized by the loss of “handfuls” of hair, often following emotional or physical stressors.
Alopecia Areata (also known as AA) and the other listed hair loss diseases all have unique features on examination that aid in diagnosis. Treatment for these disorders and telogen effluvium focuses on resolution of the underlying cause.

I turned 50 in june 05, and started to lose my hair in handfuls. I have seen a dermatoligist and have been told that it could possibly telogen effluvium. Will this stop? how long on average does this continue? I dont know how I am going to have any hair left, I have lost at least half of my hair. Also recently my scalp has started to itch all over, what is that from and what can I do?

Hi, my name is Denise I am 32 years old and I do not know what is causing my hair loss. I started noticing this about 3 months ago. I just run my fingers through it not even pulling and like 5-6 hairs come out like nothing. I can do this repeatedly and it does not stop! I am so frustrated, my husband tells me that my hair looks fine, but I know a significant difference. I do not take BCP’s and I work out 4 days a week. Take prenatal vitamins, I am not pregnant but I feel these vitamins will help. I have been surfing the internet when I came across a disorder called Telogen effuvium when is excessive shedding of hair more than the average “100″ hairs a day. I can take a shower and make a hair ball the size of a large marble rolled up. I am so sad, I just needed to share that.

Denise and JR,
I have the same thing! I’m in my 20’s and in the last 2 months my hair just falls out when I touch it as well. I shed all over the place. It does not stop. My scalp itches too. It’s very hard to deal with because I don’t know what to do. The doctor took lab work and told me I was fine, I just had telogen effluvium. I feel I have no solution. I’m afraid of going bald, and feel I’m on my way! Thanks for sharing. I feel the same way. It’s terrible.
